"Barbara" Joy Green
Barbara Joy Green (born Withington), 91, of Victoria-by-the
Sea, died peacefully at home on June 21, 2024 surrounded and held by
her family. Barbara was the beloved wife of Robert Paul Green
(deceased) and the loving mother of Frances (Tom), MaryAnn (Brian),
Caryl (Jean-Marc, deceased), Anthony (deceased), Helen (Neal), Adrian
(Maria), and Elizabeth (Brent).
Barbara is lovingly
remembered by her grandchildren: Jennifer and Lisa; William, John and
Matthew; Catherine and Erin; Kelly, Nathan and Ryan; and Christopher;
and her great grandchildren: Meredith and Caleb; Julia and Pacey;
Evelyn, Myles and Hannah; and Leo and Eloise; and her extended family
in England, and her many friends across Canada and around the world.
After growing up and marrying in Portsmouth, England,
Barbara and Paul emigrated to Quebec, Canada in 1955 where they raised
their family in Montreal then in Otterburn Park. Over these years,
Barbara pursued a university education at the Thomas More Institute
(B.A.) and Concordia University (M.A. History and Philosophy of
Religion). Barbara and Paul initiated and implemented many projects in
the life of the community, the church and the local schools. Barbara
was elected as Otterburn’s first woman municipal councillor,
and was the chief organizer for several provincial and federal
elections.
In 1968, Barbara and Paul visited Victoria
by-the-Sea, PEI for a summer vacation and fell in love with the
people, the sailing, and the village life, and returned year after
year. After Paul’s death in 1990, Barbara moved to the
former Samuel Holland homestead on Tryon Point Road to live there year
round.
Wherever Barbara lived, she was deeply passionate
about her family and her community, about gardening and the
environment, and was a life-long learner committed to food security,
climate change and renewable energy, history and world politics,
always grounded in common sense.
After moving to PEI,
Barbara instilled her love of learning by reading to young children at
Englewood School and tutored in her home. She was an active member of
the Tryon Watershed, the Island Nature Trust, and the Crapaud Library,
and contributed regularly to the Island County Line Courier. Barbara
lived her deeply-held faith in so many practical ways, and contributed
regularly to food banks in both Quebec and the Island right up to her
death.
To celebrate their 50 years of life in Canada,
Barbara bought 12 acres of land along the Tryon River and donated the
property to the Island Nature Trust to reforest and conserve for
future generations. She was always grateful for the many opportunities
that Canada had given them, and true to character, Mum’s
final words were "Thank You!" Please take a moment to walk
the trail on Barbara Green Natural Area to share in her vision and
passion for nature.
We would like to thank the amazing Home
Care team, along with Arlene Marshall and Merrill Weale, who cared for
Mum and made it possible for her to live her last days in her home,
surrounded by her family and the Island beauty that she so
loved.
The funeral and celebration of life will be held at
a date yet to be determined at the South Shore United Church in Tryon
with visitation taking place prior to celebration of life.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be mailed to Island Nature Trust
through Lawless Funeral Home (21 Somerset St., PO Box 44, Kinkora, PE,
C0B 1N0) or we suggest that you plant a tree in Barbara’s
memory!
"Always put back more than you
take."
